Listen to the full version

China is moving to update rules for its rapidly expanding spot-power market, a key step toward building a nationwide electricity-trading system as renewable energy takes a larger role in the grid.
The National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planner, on Monday released draft rules that would govern spot electricity trading across the country, replacing interim regulations introduced in 2023. The new rules are expected to take effect Jan. 1, 2027, and remain in force for five years. Public consultation runs through Nov. 18.
