Beijing, Manila Squabble Over Sea Name

China said it opposed the Philippines' attempt to change the name of the South China Sea. Amidst disputes over who holds sovereignty in the South China Sea, the Philippine government said it will change the name of the waters off the west coast of the country to the West Philippine Sea, and will submit the name change to the United Nations. China argues that such measures are moot because the waters have long been internationally recognized as the South China Sea, and a new name will not affect its sovereignty over the sea. Manila says the move is meant to clarify its position on the matter. Tensions between the two countries flared up this year after the Philippines detained Chinese fishermen near the Huangyan Island, or Scarborough Shoal.
