Rule Change Forces Migrants' Children out of Beijing for School

(Beijing) – A 13-year-old we'll call Ruirui recently had to leave Beijing so he could continue his schooling, despite the fact he was born and raised in the city. His departure is a result of a controversial policy by the city government to tighten population controls.
Ruirui's parents have lived in the capital for more than two decades. However, as migrant workers, they do not have a household registration, also known as hukou, for the city – and neither does Ruirui. Before he left, the teenager had just started junior high in a well-known public school in the northern district of Haidian.
