Lawrence H. Summers Becomes Advisor to Caixin Media’s Board of Trustees for the Public Confidence Committee

Lawrence H. Summers, economist and former U.S. Treasury secretary, will advise the Board of Trustees for the Public Confidence Committee of Caixin Media.

Lawrence H. Summers is Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard University. He served as the 71st U.S. Treasury Secretary during the administration of Bill Clinton, and as Director of the National Economic Council in the administration of Barack Obama. Summers also was the chief economist of the World Bank. He was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal for his achievements in the field of macroeconomics.

"Credibility of news and public confidence always have been key to Caixin Media since its establishment," said Hu Shuli, Caixin Media’s chief editor. "Mr. Summers will provide Caixin Media more diversified perspectives and lend intellectual support to help Caixin better report and analyze economic issues."

Aiming at protecting the principle of "News for the Public Interests" against the interference of power and business, Caixin Media set up the Board of Trustees for the Public Confidence Committee, the first such board among Chinese media, in March 2010. The Board of Trustees is independent of Caixin’s Board of Directors and management, and is authorized to make key decisions on the editorial directions and the appointment of chief editor.

Caixin Media’s Board of Trustees consists of prominent economic and academic leaders. The current members are Wu Jinglian, senior research fellow of the Development Research Center of China’s State Council; Xu Hong, professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at Peking University; Xiao Meng, executive editor in BiJiao Magazine and Xie Ping, Professor in the PBC School of Finance,Tsinghua University. Wu is the board chairman. Summers will serve as an advisor to the board.

Summers graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in economics in 1975, and received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1982. In 1983, at the age of 28, Summers became one of the youngest tenured professors in Harvard's history. Mr. Summers started his work in the field of public affairs in 1982 as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers during the administration of Ronald Reagan. He was also the first social scientist to receive the Waterman Award from the National Science Foundation of the United States. Summers has served in several key positions, including as U.S. Treasury Secretary, chairman of the National Economic Council, and chief economist of the World Bank. Summers is currently the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard University.
