Hon Hai, Sharp Eye $6.9 Billion China LCD Plant, Report Says
(Beijing) – Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. is considering building a 800 billion yen ($6.9 billion) plant in China to make large liquid crystal displays (LCD) using technology from Japan's Sharp Corp.
It would be one of the pair's first major endeavors since Hon Hai acquired Sharp this year, according to a Japanese media report.
Most of the funds for the plant would come from Hon Hai, a major contract manufacturer whose clients include Apple Inc., according to a report from Kyodo over the weekend. Sharp would supply the technology for the plant, which could start making large LCD screens as soon as 2019, the report said, without naming sources.
