Despite his advanced age, the death Monday of Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee came as a shock to much of China, where the news shot to the top of Baidu’s trending topics list.

Hashtags related to the iconic figure accounted for nearly half of the top 10 trending words on Weibo.

Marvel films have been hugely popular in China, and just last month the company unveiled its first-ever China-inspired superhero, Jewel, inspired by Chinese pop singer G.E.M.

Memes have also spread online of made-up superheroes that netizens wish Lee had lived long enough to create. One stops flight delays and another polices passenger behavior on high-speed trains.
