President Xi Jinping arrived in Papua New Guinea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summits Thursday, the first of a three-stop tour observers say could help cement the country's influence in the region.
Notably absent is U.S. President Donald Trump, who will be sending Vice President Mike Pence instead to a small island nation already flush with billions of dollars in Chinese investment and China-financed infrastructure.
Xi is expected to meet Pacific island leaders at the conference, which starts Saturday, as well as visit Brunei and the Philippines as part of his tour.
