China has begun selling train tickets for the world’s largest annual migration — the Spring Festival holiday, when hundreds of millions of people visit their hometowns or depart for family vacations.

This Chinese New Year is officially Feb. 4-10, but the wider so-called “travel rush dates” — periods of high-volume traffic — run from Jan. 21 to Mar. 1.

Travelers can now buy online train tickets for travel on those first two days: Jan. 21 and 22. Tickets for travel on later dates will go on sale over the coming days.

Last year, the country logged 3 billion individual trips, counting land, air and water travel, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

Authorities are urging travelers to make online purchases. Offline sales are being made available two days after their online sales dates.
