A forest fire in southwest China’s Sichuan province has killed 26 people, state-run Xinhua News Agency confirmed.
The fire broke out on Saturday in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture, in a remote forest at an average elevation of around 4,000 meters above sea level.
Over the weekend, 30 out of 689 firefighters sent to contain the fire went missing after a sudden change in wind direction caused the fire to spread, according to official People’s Daily.
At the time of publication, 26 of their bodies have been found, Xinhua reported.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Rescue operations and fire containment efforts are still ongoing.
