China’s Starbucks challenger Luckin Coffee and popular online forum Tianya Club are among 15 mobile application operators cites by an industry regulator for violations that undermine users’ privacy.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) blacklisted the apps, which also include job-hunting site Togocareer and news aggregator Yidianzixun, for illegally collecting user information, sharing private data with third parties without user approval or granting unnecessary access to user data. The companies were ordered to rectify their practices by Jan. 17 or face punishment, according to the MIIT.

This was the second batch of apps cited for privacy violations. Last month, the ministry named 41 apps for misconduct involving user data, three of which were removed from app stores for failing to make corrections.

Chinese regulators are stepping up efforts to combat misuse of personal information online. In late December, the MIIT, Cyberspace Administration of China, the Ministry of Public Security and the State Administration for Market Regulation jointly issued a document providing a reference for regulators to identify violations and guidance for app operators to carry out self-checks and for netizens to monitor apps’ practices.
