Since she became managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2019, Kristalina Georgieva has seen how fast the world can change.

Her last trip to China was a case in point. When she arrived in early December to meet with former Premier Li Keqiang for the “1+6” roundtable — an annual dialogue China holds with six major global economic and financial organizations — the government was holding on to strict Covid-19 controls to try to stamp out the virus. By the time she left, the controls had already been relaxed.
