Blog: Zhang Jike Case Highlights Cracks in China’s Privacy Law

Recently, table tennis player Zhang Jike was accused of amassing a large gambling debt and using his celebrity ex-girlfriend’s private photos as leverage to pay them off.

According to an online post, Zhang sent some private photos and video clips of his famous ex-girlfriend to a person he owed a large gambling debt to. That person then used the videos to try to blackmail the well-known Chinese actress, the post said. The would-be blackmailer got caught and ended up with a seven-year prison sentence for extortion.
