Foreign capital roared back into Chinese mainland stock markets in the first quarter after a slump in 2022.

Net inflows into yuan-denominated A-share markets amounted to 150 billion yuan ($22 billion), exceeding the total for the whole of last year, Fang Xinghai, a vice chairman of China’s top securities regulator, said Thursday.

Net inflows of foreign capital into A-share markets fell to 90 billion yuan in 2022 from 300 billion yuan in 2021, Fang said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative Financial Summit. Almost 5% of the market capitalization of A-share stocks is now held by overseas investors, he said.
