Chinese City to Pay Civil Servants in Digital Yuan

What’s new: The local government, state-owned enterprises and public institutions in an eastern Chinese city will begin paying employees in the country’s digital currency from May.
Authorities of Changshu, a county-level city under Suzhou, Jiangsu province, made the decision to accelerate the trial of e-CNY, a screenshot of a government document circulating online shows.
The background: Suzhou was one of four pilot locations after the trial of e-CNY started late 2019, before the program was expanded to more regions. Several districts and county-level cities in Suzhou have used the digital yuan for multiple purposes, such as bank loans and salary payments to state employees, Suzhou’s financial regulatory bureau said previously.
