The average number of children per couple in Hong Kong plunged to a new record low of 0.9 in 2022, while the proportion of childless couples more than doubled in five years, displacing one-child families as the majority, according to a twice-a-decade survey released Tuesday.

The survey, conducted by the city’s Family Planning Association, was released as Hong Kong has long been plagued by falling fertility and marriage rates. It polled 1,502 pairs of married or cohabiting partners between September and December.
