China Appoints First Naval Officer as Minister of Defense

China has named Admiral Dong Jun, former chief of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), as its new defense minister, replacing Li Shangfu who was removed from the post two months ago.

China’s National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s top legislature, announced the appointment after the NPC Standing Committee members voted on multiple ministerial-level nominations during a meeting on Friday.
