The number of Hong Kong shoppers heading to the Chinese mainland has surged recently. But in stark contrast with the pre-pandemic trend of mainlanders going south in search of luxury goods, Hong Kongers are traveling across the border to bulk buy at wholesale retailers.

With the Spring Festival just over a month away and many people hunting for cost-effective ways to meet their holiday shopping needs, Hong Kong travel agency EGL Tours recorded more than 3,000 people signing up for its newly launched “Sam’s Club Tours” to the mainland, named for the wholesale store chain, Executive Director Xuan Guoquan told Caixin.
