Guangzhou’s Huangpu district is trying to renovate shanty town areas by offering the people living there settlement vouchers known as “house tickets” which can be used to obtain new homes from a list of 17 commercial housing projects.
The size of the house ticket is based on the value of the villager’s old home and the policy aims to provide flexible housing options for those for those asked to move to make way for urban renewal.
