A rundown of the news making headlines in and around China:
Mass murderers executed: Fan Weiqiu, who killed 35 people and injured another 43 when he rammed his car into runners at a sports center in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, in November, was executed on Monday. The 62-year-old was sentenced to death for the crime of endangering public security in a dangerous manner by Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court on Dec. 27. Police said shortly after the attack that investigations showed Fan’s actions stemmed from “dissatisfaction with the outcome of his divorce property settlement.” Also on Monday, Xu Jiajin was executed after killing eight people and injuring 17 in a stabbing in November at a vocational college in Yixing, Jiangsu province. Xu was sentenced to death for intentional homicide by Wuxi Intermediate People’s Court on Dec. 17. The 21-year-old former student of the school wanted to vent his frustrations — he had failed to graduate due to poor grades and was dissatisfied with his salary as an intern, according to a police statement. Both death sentences were approved by China’s Supreme People’s Court.
