Beijing Offers to Mediate Clashes Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

China on Friday expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, calling for an immediate ceasefire and offering to mediate between its two neighbors.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Beijing is closely monitoring the situation, noting that the intensity of the current clashes surpasses previous skirmishes.
The two Islamic nations have long-running disputes over Pakistan’s accusation that Afghanistan harbours militants carrying out attacks across the border. On Friday, Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif declared “open war” against Taliban government forces in Afghanistan following air and ground strikes overnight on the neighbour's major cities including Kabul and Kandahar.
