Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean must resist the pressure to choose sides in the escalating rivalry between the U.S. and China, and should instead leverage their vast natural resources to forge flexible, independent alliances, a United Nations committee report said.

The report, released Aug. 4 by a panel under the U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, arrives as the Trump administration aggressively reasserts dominance in the Western Hemisphere to counter Beijing’s growing economic footprint. It warns that rigid alignment with either Washington or Beijing threatens the region’s autonomy, urging governments to build “geopolitical muscle” and diversify partnerships.
