China Promotes First 1980s-Born Official to Vice-Ministerial Rank in State Media

China has appointed its first 1980s-born official to the elite vice-ministerial ranks, promoting a 44-year-old journalist to a top leadership role at the Chinese Communist Party’s flagship newspaper.

Du Shangze has been named deputy editor in chief of the People’s Daily, according to an update on the official publication’s website. She will also retain her position as director of the newspaper’s political and cultural department.
