A planned airport in neighboring Nantong, designed to serve as Shanghai’s third civil aviation hub, is scheduled for completion in 2035 as the commercial powerhouse moves to ease airspace bottlenecks and expand regional capacity.
Together with Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao international airports, the facility will anchor a “two-city, three-airport” cluster engineered to handle 200 million passengers and 5.4 million metric tons of cargo annually. The initiative marks China’s first attempt at cross-provincial governance of a major airport network.
