Many scholars gathered recently to commemorate the death of Chinese historian Gao Hua, whose works challenged the party line when it came to China's first ideological mass movement.
Renowned for his 2000 work How Did the Sun Rise Over Yan'an: A History of the Rectification Movement, the Nanjing University history professor died at the age of 57 on December 26. Four days later, hundreds of people converged on the Nanjing campus to pay tribute to a man known to many as the most prominent scholar of modern Chinese history."
