China has responded to U.S. demands for trade reforms – and the result is “unlikely to trigger a breakthrough,” a Trump administration official told Reuters on Thursday.
The admission spells bad news for forthcoming talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, which are scheduled to take place later this month.
The Trump administration received China’s written response earlier this week, according to Reuters, months after U.S. officials requested Chinese trade commitments that could kick off further communication.
Reuters reports: “The Chinese document included 142 items divided into three categories: issues the Chinese are willing to negotiate for further action, issues they are already working on and issues they consider off limits, the official said.”
