There is no evidence the detention in Beijing of a Chinese-born Australian writer is connected to Australia’s policies or to the recent detention of two Canadians in China, Australia’s Defense Minister Christopher Pyne said on Monday, according to Reuters.

Writer and former Chinese diplomat Yang Hengjun is being held in China for suspicion of endangering China’s national security.

“I don’t see any evidence that the detention of Mr. Yang is linked to decisions made by the Australian government in recent times,” Pyne said, speaking at what Reuters said was a “security forum in Singapore where Chinese military officials were in attendance.”

“Nor do I see it being linked to the detention of the two Canadians,” Pyne said, Reuters reported.
