Huawei further consolidated its position as China’s top smartphone vendor during the second quarter of this year.
The telecom giant garnered a 37% of China’s smartphone market for the three months ending June, after shipping 36.3 million units domestically, according to industry tracker IDC.
Those figures come despite an overall contraction in the Chinese smartphone market, with shipments for the quarter falling 6% to 98 million units.
Huawei’s Q2 shipments represent a strong 27% year-on-year increase compared with its rivals’ more sluggish growth. Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Apple all saw their shipments drop, particularly Xiaomi, which delivered just 11.7 million units — 19% fewer than the equivalent period last year — and took a market share of 11.9%.
“In only one and a half months, Huawei was able to further strengthen its position in China and grab market share from other players in China. Its success was not only because it brought much of its overseas teams back to China to focus on local distribution, but also because of its strong brand image in the country,” said Will Wong, a research manager at IDC.
