AutoX Launches Self-Driving System for Highly Autonomous Robotaxis

By Ding Yi / Jul 07, 2021 04:23 PM / Business & Tech

AutoX has unveiled its fifth-generation self-driving system, upping the ante in its push toward full automation.

The system, designed for robotaxis featuring Level 4 self-driving capabilities, is powered by a sensor system that consists of high-resolution cameras and millimeter-wave radars and lidar sensors, enabling a car to detect obstacles within several hundred meters and even in blind spots, the company said in a statement emailed to Caixin on Tuesday.

The system is also equipped with a vehicle control unit capable of generating 2,200 trillion operations per second, AutoX said, more than triple the computing power of ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing’s new self-driving hardware platform, Didi Gemini.

The Alibaba-backed AutoX is developing Level 4 self-driving technology, the second-highest level of autonomous driving capability according to SAE International. This level of autonomy enables a vehicle to drive itself under most circumstances with no human intervention.

The 5-year-old startup is also pursuing full automation, or Level 5 technology, as reflected in a pilot program it started in Shenzhen in January that allows the general public to order rides in robotaxis that have no safety drivers or remote operators.

AutoX is among the few Chinese companies to obtain a permit from California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to test autonomous vehicles without a human driver in the U.S. state. Other Chinese firms with a DMV permit in California are Baidu, WeRide and Pony.ai, all of which are exploring the commercialization of their own robotaxi services.
