Beijing residents woke up to dust-laden winds and yellow skies Tuesday as the capital and many other parts of China were hit by yet another sandstorm from neighboring Mongolia, sending air pollution soaring to extremely hazardous levels.

Across most of Beijing at 8 a.m., concentration levels of PM10, fine particles that are damaging to the lungs, exceeded 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter, more than 20 times the one-day maximum average recommended by the World Health Organization, according to the Beijing Municipal Ecological and Environmental Monitoring Center.
