A Beijing man who exposed the corruption of a high-ranking regional official was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison for extortion and illegally obtaining personal information, concluding a bizarre legal saga that began with a multimillion-dollar real estate deal funded entirely by suitcases of cash.
The Shunyi District Court in Beijing ruled on June 29 that Zhao Ruisheng attempted to extort 7.794 million yuan ($1.15 million) from Hu Guoqiang, the former chairman of state-owned Xinjiang Energy Group, and his wife, Zhang Shuang.
