In a race to launch next-generation internet, China seems to be leap-frogging again.

Even though it’s still uncertain when its 5G network will be rolled out nationally, the country has already started conceptualizing its future 6G network. The technology will be developed in two years and commercialized by 2030, government-owned media Securities Times reported, citing wireless technology expert Su Xin from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Under the 6G network, download speed could reach 1 terabyte (1TB, or 1,000 gigabytes) per second, at least "theoretically," the report said. That’s more than 500 times the speed promised by 5G.

China is not the only country racing to complete this. The U.S., Russia and the European Union have initiated research and development towards 6G as well.
