You can’t just take a random product and call it a “challenge” to WeChat’s dominance, according to Zhang Jun, director of public relations at tech giant Tencent.
Zhang was responding to the Tuesday launch of three apps widely seen as potential rivals to Tencent’s popular, multifunctional app.
Zhang made the comments, which circulated on Chinese media Tuesday, in an online chat group, a Tencent representative told Caixin.
The representative said Zhang’s comments expressed his personal opinion and did not reflect the company’s official position.
Links to the new products have been blocked since Monday night on Wechat, China's biggest social app. The company refused to comment on this matter.
“Tricking users to download and stay active by giving them a bunch of red packets — they have the nerve to call this a product", Zhang said in his comment. The PR executive said he had been prompted to defend Tencent after the company was “criticized for some time for no good reason.”
“Anyone can work in any field, so just speak with your products,” Zhang said.
