Shenzhen will be the next Chinese city to address sexual harassment, the Shenzhen Women’s Federation said Thursday.
The Federation, which is under the supervision of Shenzhen’s Municipal Party Committee, announced that it is currently developing strategies to prevent harassment – something increasingly in the news ever since allegations against famous abusers made news alongside the global #MeToo movement.
In 2017, the Beijing’s Women's Federation launched an advertising campaign in the city’s subway encouraging female passengers to report harassment. And the city of Guangzhou launched women-only subway cars to prevent exactly that – though men often rode the cars anyway.
In Shenzhen, 42% of women said that they had encountered harassment on public transport, according to a December 2017 survey by activist Zhang Leilei.
