Smartphone-maker Oppo canceled a planned livestreamed launch of its first 5G smartphone offerings in India, in the light of Himalayan border skirmishes that have led to calls for local traders to boycott Chinese goods.

Oppo’s flagship 5G models were launched at the end of March in China and Europe. The unveiling of the Find X2 and Find X2 Pro in India, announced on May 15 in a tweet from the national headquarters, was planned to be a livestreamed launch, but was switched to video at the last minute to “avoid any possible uproar on social media,” according to a report by Reuters.

The pre-recorded video highlights Oppo’s support of India in Covid-19 times, in an attempt to mitigate anti-China sentiment that has been smoldering during the coronavirus outbreak, and dramatically worsened this week after territorial clashes in the disputed border area.

One of several smartphone brands produced by Guangdong electronics giant BBK Electronics, Oppo shipped 12% of smartphones sold in the sub-continent in the last quarter of 2019, and operates its own assembly plant in the country. Chinese brands had at least 60% of India’s market by shipment in 2019.

Following Monday night’s clashes, the Confederation of All India Traders joined in calls for a boycott of Chinese goods, urging Indian celebrities to participate. On Wednesday, Indian police arrested protesters near the Chinese embassy in New Delhi who were chanting, “Made in China, down down,” according to Reuters India.
