U.S. Firms in China Want Clarity on Trump WeChat Ban

Flynn Murphy / Aug 28, 2020 05:15 PM / World

Three-and-a-half weeks before it is set to come into effect, U.S. businesses still have no idea whether President Donald Trump’s looming WeChat ban will apply to their China operations.

That’s according to American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai President Ker Gibbs, who spoke with Caixin Thursday evening.

“We don’t have any clarity on it at all,” Gibbs said. “The administration is being very unclear and non-communicative.”

A survey published by the Chamber this week showed U.S. firms operating in China are concerned they will be hit by the vaguely-worded executive order (EO), particularly if it applies extraterritorially.

Announced early in August, the EO will ban as-yet unspecified “transactions” with WeChat and its parent company, Tencent, by “any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.”

It is to come into effect on Sept. 20.

Almost nine out of ten businesses surveyed said their operations would be negatively affected by the policy and about 5% said it could force them to lay off staff back in the U.S.
