China warned the United States Tuesday to withdraw its arrest warrant against detained Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou and refrain from seeking her extradition from Canada.
Meng, who is also the daughter of Huawei’s founder, was arrested last month in Vancouver at the request of the U.S., which says she violated sanctions against Iran.
Tensions flared Tuesday after Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. told the Globe and Mail that the formal U.S. extradition request was imminent.
China’s response, from foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying, came just hours after the Globe and Mail report.
“We also strongly urge the U.S. to immediately correct the mistakes, withdraw the arrest warrant against Meng, and not make a formal extradition request to the Canadian side,” Hua said at Tuesday’s daily press briefing in Beijing.
