A Chinese steamed bun has just won an Oscar.

Well, sort of. “Bao,” an animated film about a Chinese baozi come to life, won Best Animated Short Film at the Academy Awards on Sunday evening in Los Angeles (Monday morning Beijing time).

The film has been praised for its poignant betrayal of a mother-son relationship in Toronto’s Chinese immigrant community.

The short opens with a Chinese woman preparing baozi, the stuffed steamed buns enjoyed for breakfast across China, before one of them comes to life — which she then raises as her own son.

Director Domee Shi, who was born in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing, was the first woman to direct a Pixar short.

“Bao” was shown before all screenings of the Pixar full-length feature “The Incredibles 2.”

In their thank-you speech, Shi and producer Becky Neiman-Cobb dedicated their success “to all the nerdy girls.”
