A city in Hubei province has completed its full withdrawal from coal mining after 200 years in the industry, local authorities announced yesterday.
Yichang, the second-largest city in Hubei, closed its last 38 coal mines this year as the local government steps up effort to cut overcapacity and encourage the industrial transformation of coal enterprises.
Local authorities say that from 2006 to 2017, Yichang shut down 239 mines. The city also introduced a series of measures to guide the exit of debt-ridden and zombie mines.
