Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba says there won’t be any layoffs at the company this year, despite recent payroll cuts across the internet sector.
The pledge, made by Alibaba CEO Zhang Yong in a press release Friday, comes just days after rival shopping platform JD.com confirmed it would lay off 10% of its top executives.
China’s overall job market has been sluggish since the second half of 2018. Internet startups including bike-sharing leader Mobike, dominant ride-hailing platform Didi Chuxing, and services platform Meituan Dianping have reportedly laid off a large number of workers in recent months.
