Tesla has once again proved its popularity in China with hot sales of the Model Y, its second Shanghai-assembled car model which started deliveries only two months ago.
In February, Tesla sold 4,630 Model Ys in China, making the SUV the third best-selling new energy car model of the month, according to statistics from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Taking the January number into calculation, the data showed that the Model Y was the ninth most popular new energy car model with sales of 6,271 units since the beginning of the year.
On Jan. 18, Tesla started delivering the Model Ys to China-based customers, with prices nearly 30% cheaper than estimated prices announced in August last year, triggering speculations that the U.S. firm was adopting a low-price strategy in an attempt to become more competitive than rising domestic rivals like Nio and Xpeng. However, Tesla explained at the time that the newly announced prices were specially set for the Chinese market, where it has been deepening its localization efforts.
The Tesla Model 3, the company’s first Shanghai-built car model that started deliveries more than a year ago, was the second most popular new energy car model in February with sales of 13,688 units, compared with only 2,061 units in the same month last year, according to the CPCA.
February’s top spot was taken by the Hongguang Mini, a low-cost, two-door micro electric vehicle made by General Motors’ Chinese joint venture, with sales 17,307 units.
