Marcello Lippi is leaving his coaching position with China’s national soccer team after a defeat at the quarterfinals of the Asian Cup.
Lippi announced after Iran beat China 3-0 Thursday that the match would be the last in his contract with China, which began in late 2016.
Lippi, who led Italy to victory in the 2006 World Cup, said at a press briefing after Thursday’s match that he had tried his best to improve the Chinese team and thanked Chinese fans for their support.
Lippi had previously said he would consider renewing his contract with China after the 2019 Asian Cup.
